Man dies in emergency room lobby after being sent home

New York City readers are likely aware that a heart attack is a serious medical condition that must be dealt with appropriately. If not, serious complications and even death can occur.

In June, a 38-year-old man was taken to the emergency room with chest pains and other symptoms consistent with a heart attack. Even though the patient had a "history of cardiac issues," he was sent home and told to consult with his cardiologist.

The man went to the lobby of the emergency room to wait for a ride home. However, he never made it back home. He was found dead in a lobby chair by hospital staff hours later. In fact, so much time had passed that rigor mortis had set in.

Surviving family members have now filed a lawsuit against the hospital for the staff's negligent care. The family believes that the 38-year-old man should not have been sent home, especially considering his health history.

Whether you live in New York City or elsewhere, going to the emergency room can be a frightening experience. However, people assume that medical professionals in an emergency room will do all that they can to properly diagnose and treat them.

When hospital staff members are negligent they should be held responsible. Victims of hospital negligence or their surviving family members may wish to pursue a medical malpractice lawsuit, just as the family of the man in this story did. Although no legal action will take away the pain of losing a loved one, it may give family members peace of mind knowing that justice has been served.
