The cost of raising a child with cerebral palsy

A family in a nearby state recently got the help they need to care for their 7-year-old daughter with cerebral palsy. The young girl is not able to walk or talk and spends her days in a wheelchair. Through the Habitat for Humanity "Brush With Kindness" program, the family had $70,000 worth of renovations done to their home to accommodate their daughter's needs.

The construction created more space in the 7-year-old's bedroom to fit a hospital bed. A play room was added on so the young girl will have enough space to play with her siblings and friends. In addition, the kitchen was made larger to accommodate the young girl's wheelchair. Although a great deal of work has been done to the family's home, even more work is needed.

A story like this is heartwarming, but it also highlights the realities of caring for a child with cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is most often caused during birth when a baby is deprived of oxygen. Often, children with cerebral palsy need lifelong care.

The birth of a child is a joyous time. However, errors made in the delivery room in New York City and elsewhere can have long-term implications. Children may be left with severe medical conditions that they can never recover from.

Medical professionals can be held responsible for their mistakes through a medical malpractice lawsuit. The compensation that is awarded can be used to cover the often overwhelming medical expenses families are faced with. Although no amount of money can change the mistakes that were made in the delivery room, it can help alleviate any financial burdens.
