Patients accuse hospital and nurse of negligence

Being a patient in the hospital can be a frightening experience. New York City residents and others elsewhere rely on medical workers to provide them with appropriate care and treatment. Patients and their family members place a great deal of trust in the hands of medical professionals. Unfortunately, some people abuse that trust.

Four former patients in another state say that they developed bloodstream infections after a nurse siphoned pain medication from their IV bags. The patients have decided to pursue legal action and are suing the hospital where they were treated as well as the nurse in question for negligence.

Although 24 people in total appear to have been affected by the nurse's actions, the hospital claims that patients did not suffer significant complications. A spokesperson says the hospital attempted to get in touch with everyone who experienced adverse complications as a result of the siphoning but that four of the patients chose to move forward with legal action rather than speaking with hospital officials.

In addition to losing his job, the nurse also faced criminal charges for his actions. He pleaded guilty to obtaining a controlled substance by fraud.

A person's health is critical to their overall well-being. When someone is being treated in a hospital, medical workers should do everything they can to improve a patient's condition. Preventing further complications should be their number one priority.

When medical professionals are found to be negligent, victims and their family members may wish to pursue a medical malpractice lawsuit. A successful lawsuit may provide victims with much needed compensation.
