Hospital negligence leaves hundreds potentially infected

Going to the hospital in New York City and beyond can be a terrifying experience, but you calm yourself with the thought that you're being taken care of by accredited professionals. Never in your wildest dreams do you think that you will walk away with an incurable disease.

But due to one hospital's negligence, this is exactly what happened to a 70-year-old woman in Kansas. Earlier this month, she was notified that she had been accidentally infected with hepatitis C after a surgery she had two years prior. But who was responsible?

A medical technician, who tested positive for hepatitis C in 2010, was arrested for supposedly using fentanyl syringes, replacing the fluid inside with a dummy solution, and then administering the tainted syringes to innocent patients.

But he may not be the only one at fault. Four of the states the man worked in didn't require licensing for radiology workers, a position the technician frequently held.

Even scarier still, according to the state website, New York still has the technician's licenses as active and in good standing.

After months of research, investigators discovered that the 70-year-old Kansas woman wasn't the only case. Hundreds of patients, across eight states, may have come in contact with this particular technician. If not for his arrest, many fear there could have been more victims.

"I was pissed," the 70-year-old woman said. "And I still am. And also with the people that employed him, because he put me and my family [and] a lot of people in jeopardy [.]"

The people of New York and other states deserve the best care from accredited doctors and staff, but sometimes this doesn't always happen. Anyone suspecting that they are a victim of medical malpractice would be wise to seek legal representation.
