Patient sues doctor after failed hysterectomy

Whether you live in New York City or elsewhere, people trust that their physicians will take precautions to prevent patient harm, especially during surgery. Sadly, doctors errors can leave patients physically and emotionally damaged.

A doctor in another state is facing a civil lawsuit after a woman lost her healthy ovaries during a hysterectomy as a result of the doctor's errors. The 29-year-old patient has accused the doctor of negligence and medical battery and is seeking more than $10,000 in damages for the surgical errors.

The Iowa Board of Medicine has also punished the doctor. They have fined the physician $7,500.

The surgery took place in July 2011. The doctor has reportedly apologized for removing the woman's ovaries during the hysterectomy despite having told her that they would not be affected.

Having surgery can be a frightening experience. Adults are in charge of their lives each and every day. However, during surgery, people put their lives in the hands of doctors. Doctors' years of training usually reassures patients and their family members.

Sadly, mistakes are made in operating rooms all across the country. People can suffer minor complications as a result of those errors. However, others may suffer severe damage. The woman in this case, for instance, has suffered physical, emotional and mental harm as a result of her doctor's errors.

When doctors make mistakes that lead to patient harm they should be held responsible. Patients can do that through a medical malpractice lawsuit. Although a successful lawsuit cannot undo the past, it may help patients feel that justice has been served.
