Jury awards medical malpractice victim more than $800,000

Errors can be made at any point while a person is receiving treatment for a serious health condition. However, some of the most serious complications can arise as a result of a misdiagnosis. As one woman's story shows, an accurate diagnosis is critically important.

In 2004, a woman went to the doctor. The doctor told her she had terminal cancer. In reality, she was suffering from pneumonia. Because of the doctor's failed diagnosis, the woman went into a coma. She eventually had to have her left foot amputated.

A medical malpractice lawsuit was filed against the physician in 2008. However, as a result of juror misconduct, a judge declared a mistrial.

The case was heard by a second jury. Recently, the woman was awarded more than $800,000.

When people go to their doctor's office or the hospital because of a serious ailment, they are rarely thinking that a doctor will make a serious error such as failing to properly diagnose their condition. However, physicians in New York City and beyond sometimes make mistakes. Sadly, those mistakes can lead to serious and sometimes fatal complications.

While many people visit their doctor's office or the hospital without any problems, medical misdiagnoses do occur. Some of the most commonly misdiagnosed diseases include breast cancer, lung cancer, strokes and pulmonary embolism.

Doctors spend years learning their chosen craft. That is why people rely on them when they are suffering from a serious health condition. Sadly, even some of the most seasoned doctors can make mistakes. In those instances, a medical malpractice suit may be necessary.
