Death of comedienne leads state to investigate facility

The passing of celebrity Joan Rivers has caused the New York State Department of Health to investigate Yorkville Endoscopy. Joan was at the clinic to undergo a routine procedure on her vocal cords. During the procedure, she unexpectedly stopped breathing and later experienced cardiac arrest. Personnel were able to revive her before transporting her to a hospital where she was intentionally placed into a temporary coma. Joan was moved to private room where she was comfortable until finally passing away.

State officials do not suspect anyone at the clinic of any wrongdoing. The investigation is being done to ensure that there was no negligence by those performing the surgery. No previous patients of the clinic have filed complaints. However, one elderly man filed a suit against the doctors themselves. The patient lost the suit.

A number of medical experts that weren't treating Joan have made statements that may explain what happened during the procedure. They say there is a risk during an endoscopy of the patient's throat clamping shut and preventing any breathing. It may be difficult to open the throat again and allow the patient to move air on their own. This is one theory of what may have caused Joan's death.

Cases of medical malpractice can be complicated and difficult to prove. Instances like this one show how a simple and routine procedure can develop major and even lethal complications.

Patients put their lives in the hands of doctors and surgeons. When complications arise, further expenses can be incurred during a prolonged recovery. A lawyer with experience in medical malpractice may be able to help patients get compensation for these extra expenses. This may be possible whether the mistake was due to negligence, inexperience or a risk of the procedure.
