Failure to prepare patients for surgeries in Manhattan

A survey done by Gallup researchers indicates that pre-surgery education is an important part of ensuring that individuals undergoing medical procedures have positive outcomes. When people who are about to undergo a medical device implantation surgery know what to expect throughout the process, after it is completed and how to care for themselves, they are likely to have better recovery rates and fewer problems. However, those who did not feel they were prepared were more likely to have trouble.

The three questions asked by Gallup were if the patient knew what to expect after their procedure, if they had been adequately educated about what post-surgery would be like, and if they followed instructions following the procedure related to medication and recovery. Although doctors have limited ability to ensure a patient follows post-surgery instructions, researchers discovered that people tend to take care of themselves so long as they are told what they need to do.

It was found that just over a third of patients strongly agreed with all three questions, which means there is a lot of room for improvement. Hospitals are urged to be proactive about communicating with patients, which can help reduce anxiety before a surgery. Checklists can also be helpful in reducing surgical errors as well as ensuring that patients are educated appropriately.

Along with failing to explain to someone what to expect during and after a procedure, surgical mistakes may also cause a variety of complications for patients. These can range from wrong site surgery to leaving tools in a patient, and they can often lead to the worsening of a person's condition as well as the development of new medical problems. A victim of a surgical error may wish to speak with a medical malpractice attorney to determine what remedies may exist to obtain compensation for the damages that have been sustained.
